WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AQUATIC THERAPY?

BENEFITS OF WATER

BUOYANCY
Buoyancy is the property of water that can support 90% of a patient’s body weight when they are immersed in neck deep water.

REDUCTION OF GRAVITY
Stresses on joint surfaces are eased by the water’s buoyancy, reducing pain and inflammation. This allows for earlier therapy on post-injury or post-surgery clients.

RESISTANCE
Water has a drag effect due to the forces of water and turbulence that increases resistance, which strengthens muscles. Water movement is more naturally resistant than land movement.

ASSISTANCE
Despite the increased resistance, water allows for more free movement than on land. This allows the patients to do more exercises than they would be able to do on land with less pain.

AQUATIC PHYSICAL THERAPY GOALS
Patients will receive an individualized pool exercise program aimed at improving their function. Programs will be designed and implemented by a physical therapist. As appropriate, patients will be progressed to land based rehabilitation programs to maximize their functional recovery. For patients in which land based programs may be inappropriate, rehabilitation will be continued in the pool with progression to a home exercise program.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

A water therapy prescription from your doctor is necessary to bill your insurance. Once obtained, call 541-779-6146 for an appointment.
